FAQ

Palaia

Palaia is a charming medieval village located in the province of Pisa, in the heart of the Valdera region of Tuscany. Surrounded by rolling hills covered with vineyards, olive groves, and woodlands, it preserves a rich historical, artistic, and cultural heritage. The origins of Palaia date back to the Etruscan era, as evidenced by numerous archaeological findings. The name itself derives from the Latin word "Palaja," referring to a place where wooden stakes were gathered and processed. Historical documents mention the village as early as 986, when it was under the control of the bishops of Lucca. During the Middle Ages, Palaia was contested by the powerful cities of Pisa, Lucca, and Florence due to its strategic location between the Arno and Era valleys.
